Tigard inventor works to pry his way into the tool market

The trouble was the vinyl siding. It wouldn't come off the building, despite the best efforts of a man who has spent his adult life making tools.

So Joe Skach of Tigard set about creating a tool that would do the job easily and efficiently, with no motor or electronics involved. Now Skach's invention is poised to pry its way into the worldwide pry bar market.

It's all about simple leverage: Skach's Artillery Pry Bar System is a patented collection of interchangeable blades, handles and fulcrums that have multiple uses. Make no mistake --these are mean devices. The average person can easily exert hundreds of pounds of pressure on the desired target when the pry bar is properly applied.

The blades, ranging from 3/4 inch to 8 inches in width, are designed to remove decking, staples and nails, as well as concrete, roofing and siding. It's all in the handle: There are two, plus an extender, each offering different leverage and weight-breaking capacities.

Skach designed and forged a prototype basic kit with five attachments and assembled tools. He's negotiating with a Chinese company to manufacture the kit so he can sell it for $150 retail. Other attachments can be added to the kit, at a cost of $10 to $35 each. A full set with 12 attachments and three tools to assemble it will cost $295.

Less a weekender's occasional tool, it's designed for workers in the building trades. He's had nothing but positive feedback from those who have tried his tool and found their work easier and faster. Skach's challenge is marketing.

Mike Guertin, a Rhode Island builder and writer for Tools of the Trade magazine, said Skach's pry bar is unique. "I'm really impressed with this tool, because it is versatile and efficient," said Guertin, who recently reviewed several prying bars and demolition tools for the magazine.

"I used it to do a variety of jobs, and it worked beyond my expectations," he said. "It's also a good bargain for builders. To acquire the tools to do the work of the Artillery Pry Bar System, you would have to buy several different sets and spend a lot more money than what Joe is selling his for."

But Skach has been unable to sell it to a manufacturer here. So once again, he's taken matters into his own hands.

"For reasons that I don't understand, I haven't been able to find a company out there that would buy the idea from me and manufacture it," said Skach, 46. "But I do believe it's the best prying bar out there, and I am going all the way to put it into production and into stores."

" All the way" means refinancing his house to launch the business, which began in 2003. At the time, work was slow at the tool-making company where Skach worked full time. He supplemented his income with a construction company and worked on a school in the Columbia Gorge. His task was to remove the school's vinyl siding.

The tools available to him failed.

"I couldn't find anything that worked well," Skach said. "So I went to my machine shop, made something, and it worked great. It was light, long and it sped the job up, making it a lot easier."

With the support of friends and colleagues and by working closely with contractors, he developed the Artillery Pry Bar System and hired a North Carolina marketing company that urged him to outsource production.

Skach created a Web site that takes orders, and he's had 60 orders, he said, mostly from contractors who tested the tool for him. But his sights are set on making the kits available by November at such mainstream outlets as Lowe's and other stores in the United States and Canada.

If Skach has his way, he'll pry into the market before anyone notices.
